En janvier 1910, Edith Wharton emménage dans un appartement au 53 Rue de Varennes, une rue proche des Invalides. En mettant de l’ordre dans mes livres j’ai retrouvé la belle biographie richement illustrée – Edith Wharton : An extraordinary life de Eleanor Dwight- que j’avais fini de lire le « 18 avril 2001 », il y a 9 ans jour pour jour, comme je l’avais inscrit à l’intérieur. C’est là que j’avais vue, pour la première fois, page 165, une photo des inondations de Paris.Quand je suis allée à l’expo Paris inondé 1910, j’ai repensé à Edith Wharton. La Rue de Varenne est peu affectée par l’inondation, et bien que l’eau atteigne le pas de la porte du 53, le téléphone et l’électricité continuèrent de fonctionner.

Peut-être Edith Wharton a-t-elle imaginé qu’Ellen Olenska vivait rue de Varenne ? En tout cas, le magnifique dôme des Invalides étincelait plus sur le portrait de son architecte – Jules hardouin Mansart – au Louvre, que dans la réalité, en ce jour d’avril où je l’ai photographié.
A few streets away, a few hours away, Ellen Olenska waited. There was nothing now to keep her and Archer apart—and that afternoon he was to see her. He got up and walked across the Place de la Concorde and the Tuileries gardens to the Louvre. She had once told him that she often went there, and he had a fancy to spend the intervening time in a place where he could think of her as perhaps having lately been. For an hour or more he wandered from gallery to gallery through the dazzle of afternoon light, and one by one the pictures burst on him in their half-forgotten splendour, filling his soul with the long echoes of beauty.
